Unai Emery is expected to rotate his squad as Arsenal welcome Brentford to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night for a third-round Carabao Cup tie.

The Gunners head coach made a string of changes in the Europa League last week before recalling first-team regulars for the Premier League win over Everton. Henrikh Mkhitaryan (ankle) and Sokratis Papastathopoulos (leg) could miss out.

The Carabao Cup, also known as the League Cup or EFL Cup, begins this week for some of the Premier League’s top teams. The competition, a domestic tournament that is important but not quite up to the level of the FA Cup, still provides a trophy that teams covet and was won by Manchester City last season.

Many were left scratching their heads after Unai Emery selected a starting lineup (and substitutes) comprised of predominately first team starters for last week’s Europa League clash with Vorskla Poltava. Will the manager do the same for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie? I’d wager not both because of the tricky Watford fixture at the weekend and because of the (perceived, at least on my part) relative lack of importance of the Carabao Cup in general.

Reports are that one or both of Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah should see significant minutes on Wednesday. After his fantastic performance against Vorskla, I’d expect Alex Iwobi to start – he may even be deployed as Arsenal’s central playmaker.
